Cowan’s Auctions' Appraisal, Trust and Estate Services offers a professional service to evaluate personal property assets. We service a broad range of customers including private clients, executors and banks, providing thorough and confidential services to help our clients meet their goals.

Appraisal Services

Cowan’s helps personal and institutional clients establish fair market value for their collections. These values may be used for trust valuation, insurance, charitable donations or collateral loans. A final appraisal will include detailed descriptions of each item as researched by our staff. At your request, we can also provide a photographic record.

Estate Planning and Settlement

Cowan’s Auctions will assist personal clients, executors and fiduciaries in the area of estate planning or settlement by appraising and quantifying all aspects of personal property. Should a sale be considered, Cowan’s offers a comprehensive marketing plan along with dedicated specialists to manage the project. We offer many options for our clients, including nationally advertised auctions accompanied by a printed catalog and smaller gallery sales.

Our national reputation, advertising expertise and past auction history have garnered us a reputation and proven record of selling estate collections and artwork for record prices. The entire staff at Cowan’s Auctions will work conscientiously toward realizing the greatest return on your consignments.

The Difference between an Auction Estimate and an Appraisal

An appraisal is a formal valuation generally used for estate, tax, insurance, charitable contribution or loan purposes. An auction estimate is the price range that our specialists feel your particular item will bring at auction (e.g. $400-600). These estimates are published in our catalogs and on our Web site when we hold an auction.

ISA Certified

As required by the International Society of Appraisers (ISA), all appraisals are prepared in conformity with and are subject to the standards and requirements set forth in the ISA's Code of Ethics and Report Writing Standard. In addition, appraisals are required to conform to The Appraisal Foundation's Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP). The ISA is the largest association of trained and tested personal property appraisers in the U.S.

The IRS now requires an appraisal for non cash charitable contributions in excess of $5000. Such appraisals must be completed by an appraiser with a designation from a recognized professional appraiser organization such as ISA or by a specialist in the area being appraised. Consultations and Brokerage services available.
