Cowan's to Host May 28th Ceramics Auction Featuring Pablo Picasso Pieces

Cowan's Auctions Modern Ceramics Auction will take place on May 28th, 2015 at 12:00 PM EST. The sale will include 70 lots and will be held at Cowan's Auctions salesroom in Cleveland, OH. This auction will feature a broad selection of modern ceramic pieces. Of special note are pieces by renowned artists such as Pablo Picasso, Michele Oka Doner, Jun Kaneko, Betty Woodman, and Michael Lucero.  


Highlighted in the sale is a set of eleven sculptures crafted by Michele Oka Doner piece. Michele Oka Doner is best known today for her bronze sculptures that she shows at Marlborough Gallery in New York and her large installation pieces. This beautifully crafted piece is estimated at $80,000/100,000.


The Modern Ceramics Auction will also feature two pieces by Pablo Picasso. The first, a Chouette Madoura Owl, is estimated to bring in between $20,000/30,000. The second piece, a Madoura Plate is expected to bring $5,000/7,000. 


A Jun Kaneko piece titled Dango is estimated to bring $8,000/12,000.  Kaneko's artwork, which is known for its color, pattern, and scale, is included in more than seventy museum collections. Recently, Kaneko has been a production designer for opera including Mozart's Magic Flute for the San Francisco Opera as well as many productions in many other cities. Kaneko's work has great influence nationwide and Kaneko is now based out of Omaha.


A Luscious Pillow Pitcher by Betty Woodman is estimated to sell for $8,000/12,000. Woodman's signature piece is her "Pillow Pitcher". Beginning her career in the 1950s as a production potter with the aim of creating beautiful objects to enhance everyday life, Woodman is recognized internationally as one of today's most important American artists. Another piece by Betty Woodman, a Teacup and Underplate is also expected to do well at this auction. This piece is estimated at $2,500/3,500


Additional notable lots that will hit the auction block on May 28th include a Blue Lava Vase estimated at $6,000/10,000, a Jean-Pierre Larocque Untitled Horse Sculpture is also expected to bring $7,000/10,000, and a Seth Randal Amphora Vase is estimated at $6,000/10,000.
