Fine War of 1812 Hand-Colored Engraving
6/23/2011 - American History, Including the Civil War
A highly detailed, hand-colored engraving of a battle scene titled below The Georgia Militia under Gen. Floyd, attacking the Creek Indians at Autossec - Novr. 29th. 1813., marked J.W.B. del. et. sc. at lower right, ca 1820s, 7.75 x 11 in., 9 x 11.5 in. overall, framed and glazed, 14.5 x 17 in.

This engraving depicts the Upper Creek, or "Red Stick" warriors defending their town of Atasi on the Tallapoosa River, in present day Macon County, Alabama, from the Georgia Militia. This conflict is considered one of the most significant military actions taken by the Georgia Militia during the War of 1812. The attack of the Georgia Militia and Creek and Yuchi troops against the "Red Sticks" of Atasi resulted in the complete destruction of the town. Brigadier General John Floyd's expedition against the Red Sticks culminated with this particular battle and the subsequent burning of Atasi. Over 200 Red Sticks were killed, while Floyd lost less than twelve soldiers during the attack. (Information obtained from the Society for Georgia Archaeology, March 31, 2011.)
