Nathaniel P. Banks Autographed CDV
6/23/2011 - American History, Including the Civil War
A vignetted copy cdv of Nathanial P. Banks, with no backmark, and inked inscription on verso Nath. P. Banks, Revens (?) House / March 2d 1879.

A self-made politician of modest origins and little education, Banks (1816-1894) epitomized the American Volunteer General promoted well beyond his ability. Banks secured Baltimore following the riots and was perceived to have opened the lines of communication with the beleaguered Capital. Henceforward, Banks failed in every assignment he was given. He was ejected from the Valley in 1862 and summarily defeated by "Stonewall" at Cedar Mountain. Transferred west, Banks oversaw the costly assaults at Port Hudson and was the architect of the disastrous Red River campaign. He received the thanks of Congress and was mustered out in August 1865. Banks was then elected to the first of six terms in Congress and died in 1894.
