Oval Albumen of Pvt. Henry L. Austin, Co. D., 19th Virginia Infantry

With name and regiment penciled on verso. Oval measures 5 x 7 in. on 8 x 10 in. mount lacking photographer’s credit. An early portrait of Henry L. Austin of the Howardsville Grays wearing frockcoat with three rows of black trim around cuffs and single band around collar. The trousers bear a stripe of wide black trim while the kepi is fixed with curious but unidentified circular device. Austin posed with a belt knife while holding a cavalry saber and scabbard, both presumably photographers props. Henry L. Austin was listed as a 27 year-old Physician when he enlisted in Howardsville on April 19, 1861.

The Howardsville Grays mustered in for one year’s service at Manassas Junction on May 19, 1861 as Company D, 19th Virginia Infantry commanded by Colonel Philip St. George Cocke who later committed suicide. The regiment fought at First Manassas in Cocke’s 5th Brigade commanded by Lt. Colonel J.B. Strange and lost 6 men with brigade casualties numbering 105. Private Austin died of disease at Centerville on December 16, 1861.


Condition:  
Sepia albumen undamaged with numerous tiny ink spots scattered throughout showing soft contrast, about VG. Austin’s beard and eyes have been highlighted with ink. Mount soiled but undamaged. No evidence of having ever been in a frame.
