An emblem of postmodern architecture, the Humana Building in downtown Louisville, KY, was designed by architect Michael Graves and completed in 1985. It has been widely praised for its "richly colored composition made up of abstract, highly personal variations on classical forms," as Paul Goldberger wrote in his New York Times review of the newly erected building. According to Goldberger, the edifice is "a kind of collage of modernist and classical elements that is like neither the modernist skyscrapers of the post-World War II years nor the classical skyscrapers of the early years of this [20th] century." The building is also noteworthy for its four different facades, contributing to its original "collage" appearance. The sketch offered here represents the Southern facade of the building.

PROVENANCE
The Humana Corporate Art Collection
Purchased from the Max Protetch Gallery, NYC, after the completion of the building

The Max Protetch Gallery was one of the first institutions to display Michael Graves' architectural sketches, through multiple exhibitions of his work in the early 1980s, and contributed greatly to establish him as a leading architect of the postmodern movement.
