Dale Chihuly (American, b. 1941)
5/6/2016 - Modern Art: Live Salesroom Auction
Chief Pattern Blanket Vase, First Phase, 1850
colored blown glass
signed on underside
1976
dia. 7.25, ht. 8.5 in.

The Navajo Blanket Cylinders series (1975-1976) originated from Dale Chihuly's interest in Navajo weavings. The vessels in this series, such as the one offered here, are noteworthy for their symmetrical appearance, quite unusual among Chihuly's work, and for the glass thread motifs that adorn them.

PROVENANCE
Gifted by the artist to Elaine Curtin, the mother of the consignor, and friend of Chihuly. She worked as Personnel Director at the Rhode Island School of Design in the mid 1970s when Chihuly was teaching there.

The lot includes a hand-written note signed by the artist addressed to Elaine Curtin.
