Richard DeVore (American, 1933-2006)
5/6/2016 - Modern Art: Live Salesroom Auction
Untitled Loaf Form Vessel
stoneware
ca 1970
ht. 4.5, wd. 11, dp. 9 in.
DeVore was an American ceramicist born in Toledo, Ohio who earned a B.Ed. degree with an art major from the University of Toledo in 1955 and received an MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1957. In 1966, DeVore became head of the ceramics department at Cranbrook and was a member of the Colorado State University art faculty from 1978-2004. In 1987 DeVore became a fellow of the American Craft Council. He is known for organic forms finished in matte glazes that suggest sun bleached bones or even translucent skin. This exceptional early example, which is a rare find, shows the beginnings of what would come of the exceptional artist of the late 20th century.
