Relic of the Battle Flag of the 177th Ohio Volunteer Infantry

Remnants of a silk flag. Includes some red and white threads, plus an approx. 1.5 x 1 in. piece of blue with two points of a gilt painted star on it. With typed card giving information about the service of the 117th OVI: Attached to the 2nd Brig., 3rd. Div., 23rd Army Corp, Army of the Ohio. Present at the Siege of Murfreesboro (Dec. 12, 1864), Capture of Wilmington, (Feb. 22, 1865), Surrender of Johnston's Army (26 April 1865), Occupation of Goldsboro & Raleigh, NC.

The 177th Ohio Vol. Infy. was formed in Oct. 1864 to serve for one year. It was sent to Nashville, then Tullahoma before being ordered to Murfreesboro, where it led the charge that drove the Confederates back capturing two pieces of artillery and 200 prisoners. After Hood was driven out of Tennessee, it was sent to Washington, then to Fort Fisher, North Carolina. It saw a number of engagements in the vicinity, before joining Sherman's army. It mustered out in June 1865.
