Non-Regulation 50th Massachusetts Infantry Presentation Sword
4/30/2014 - Firearms and Militaria: Live Salesroom Auction
30.5" blade with etched panels of military motifs. Brass pommel with chased  designs. Leather and brass wire wrapped handle.  Brass knuckle bow.  Leather scabbard with engraved  brass throat and engraved brass tip.  Throat engraved with inscription: Sergeant B. F Blatchford by Co. B. 50 Regt.

Benjamin F. Blatchford was a resident of Rockport, MA.  He enlisted in B Co., 50th MA on August 20, 1862, at Rockport as 1st Sergeant.  He was mustered out on August 24, 1863, at Wenham, MA.  On December 30, 1863 Blatchford re-enlisted and was commissioned into Co. K,  2nd MA Heavy Artillery.  Promoted  to 1st Lieut. on June 21, 1865, he m/o Sept. 3, 1865 at Wilmington.  Benjamin died on November 11, 1906 in Gloucester, MA.

The 50th MA. was a nine-month militia regiment that served in the Dept. of the Gulf and fought at Port Hudson participating in both assaults. The 2nd MA Heavy Artillery was assigned to the Dept. of VA & NC and garrisoned various points, split up by company.  Blatchford's Co. K. was posted to Norfolk and Portsmouth along with Co. L. during its service.


Condition:  
Blade is excellent. Brass has nice tarnished look. Leather handle has some minor scuffs. Scabbard has some crazing and cracking. Overall very good condition.
