Composite Dish Hilt Rapiers, Lot of Two
4/30/2014 - Firearms and Militaria: Live Salesroom Auction
First item is a German sword with 43" fullered blade marked
S.H.H.H.H.C.II.M
on the ca 17th century blade. Wide fuller near the hilt. Later made cast and pierced hilt with plume motifs. Ricasso carved with twined fish or serpent heads. Short straight quillons with flattened diamond ends. Crossguard rings flattened in the center and decorated with incised circles and lines. Knuckle bow has two short ribs attached, whose ends curl into serpent or fish heads and a flattened circular midsection with circle and scroll engraving. Knuckle bow screwed to carved bulbous pommel. Ribbed grip wrapped with heavy twisted wire.
Second sword is ca 18th Century Bilbao type sword with 39.5" blade. Both sides of blade stamped with long wavy line along the median near the hilt. Cupped hilt with scalloped edge made to resemble large flower petals. Straight quillons with button finials. Knuckle bow has a turned midsection and a button finial. Grip wrapped with twisted copper wire. Void of grip rings. Pommel is spherical with flanged neck and a tiny finial.
Condition:
First sword: blade is very good the cup and grips with some oxidation.
Second sword: even salt and pepper pitting throughout.
