German Hunting Swords, Lot of Three
4/30/2014 - Firearms and Militaria: Live Salesroom Auction
First sword is ca 18th century with 28" straight double-edge unmarked blade with short median fuller. Cast guard, quillon and knuckle bow are all of one piece. Single shell guard with grooved edge. Single quillon with expanded end. Knuckle bow has two decorative grooves at midsection. Slightly flared cylindrical grip of fluted dark wood. Single round pommel cap with knob finial.
Second sword is ca 18th century with 22" slightly curved single-edge blade becoming double-edged at the point. Entire blade is etched to simulate Damascus watered steel. Each side of blade has etched symbols, partly visible. They may be nonsensical and do not appear to be Turkish or Cyrillic. Blade has at the hilt a raised semi-circular portion on both sides. Silver hilt with three marks on one side. One mark might be a crowned
V
. Straight quillons with bulbous ends. Bone grip scales carved with rope design borders and raised cartouche on each side. A female bust is carved into the cartouche, with a different one on each side. Grips have a trefoil shaped pommel. Plain silver grip strap. Pommel and lower quillon have rings which suspend a black metal chain.
Third sword is a Hirshfanger sword ca 1890 with a 19" straight single-edged blade becoming double-edged at the point with flattened diamond cross section. Both sides of blade etched for most of the length with different designs on each side. Inner side has scrolling vines and stylized floral motifs. Outer side has stylized foliage, hunting trophies and the stamped name
Keil in Regensburg
. Iron hilt with fluted shell-shaped guard curved toward the blade. Straight flat quillons with widely expanded ends. Quillon block has grooved line decorations. Grip is a solid piece of red stag horn. Ferrule and pommel cap are finely ridged. Leather scabbard with silver throat and drag with acorn motif.
Condition:
First sword very good. Second sword's blade is heavily oxidized near the tip and the Damascus pattern is worn and pitted throughout the sword. Sword's grips and quillon are excellent. Third sword's etchings are ca 85% vivid and leather on scabbard is still very supple.
