John Richardson
Confederate Bowie Knife
4/30/2014 - Firearms and Militaria: Live Salesroom Auction
7.75" clip point blade, engraved with a border design along the top edge of blade. Iron guard with engraved scrolls on the top and bottom. On the right side of blade is engraved
John Richardson.
Rosewood handle with iron pommel. One of the iron fittings was fired blued.
General John Richardson's career was from the time of the Revolutionary War. His son was Col. Richard Richardson. The Richardson's married into the Cantey family of Camden, South Carolina. Both families had children that served in the military and it is possible that this knife is related to those descendants - a John Richardson III, of South Carolina who served in the Civil War according to family tradition.
HDS
lists seven men so-named, five enlisted men and two officers, who served in various state units, but with the limited information at hand it is impossible to ascertain which Richardson might have been the owner.
Condition:
Knife is in excellent condition. Very sharp and crisp engravings and markings and still retains some blue finish in the protected areas. No scabbard.
