US Civil War Cased Colonel's Dress Epaulettes, 58th Infantry
4/30/2014 - Firearms and Militaria: Live Salesroom Auction
Matching pair of gold braid dress epaulets with gilt metal crescents, edged in two-toned gold bullion and 3.5" bullion fringe. Has applied silver bullion eagle rank insignia, sky blue wool disk with gold bullion unit number "
58
" bordered in two-toned silver bullion and gold eagle button with the letter "
A
" inside the shield. Reverse lined in red Morocco leather and crimson silk with brass attachment bar maker marked "
HORSTMANN BROTHERS & ALLIEN / NEW YORK
." Complete with dark brown japanned finished oval tin carrying case with internal oval insignia box.
According to the consignor this pristine set of colonel’s dress epaulettes came with the General James Wood epaulettes and descended in the family. They probably relate to Colonel Wood only by association. In fact, the actual owner is unknown as Colonel Wood of the 136th NY was never associated with any regiment having the numerical designation “58.” Parenthetically, no one named Wood(s) held the rank of colonel in the 58th NY or the 58th USCT. Still an outstanding pair of infantry dress epaulettes on their own merit.
Provenance:
Descended in the Wood Family
Condition:
Very good. Minor service wear on the lining.
Sold: $940.00
