Civil War Cased Brigadier General's Dress Epaulettes Identified to Gen. James Wood of N.Y.
4/30/2014 - Firearms and Militaria: Live Salesroom Auction
Matching pair of gold braid dress epaulets with gilt metal crescents, edged in two-toned gold bullion and 3.5" bullion fringe.  Has applied silver bullion five-point rank star insignia and gold staff eagle button.  Reverse lined in red Morocco leather and crimson velvet with brass attachment bar.  Complete with dark brown japanned finished tin carrying case with internal oval insignia box.

This fine pair of brigadier's epaulettes and the colonel’s dress epaulettes are documented as having descended in the Wood family. The consignor obtained both from a “Miss Mazy Doty, 17th Main St., Genesco, NY.”  She wrote that General Wood was her Grandfather. Accompanying the written provenance are National Archives military and pension records.

James Wood, Jr. (1820-1892) took command of the 136th NY as Colonel on August 17, 1862 and led the regiment for the duration of the war being twice brevetted—Brigadier General and Major General—on March 13, 1865. The 136th NY was assigned to the 11th Corps and Colonel Wood was in command at Chancellorsville fiasco and at Gettysburg. The Colonel transferred west joining the Army of the Cumberland and when the unlucky 11th Corps was finally broken up in April 1864, the regiment became part of the 20th Corps, engaged in heavy fighting at Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge. Later Colonel Wood took over as brigade commander seeing considerable action at Resaca, Dallas, Atlanta, the “March to the Sea,” and final operations in North Carolina. Losses were 73 officers and men killed and mortally wounded. Colonel Wood mustered out June 13, 1865 as a brevet Major General.

Post-war, Wood resumed the practice of law at Genesco and entered politics being elected to the New York Senate in 1870 followed by four terms in the State Legislature. A prominent citizen in life, General Wood died on February 25, 1892 and was buried in Temple Hill Cemetery, Genesco, N.Y.
