**WWI S&W .455 Mark II Hand Ejector ID'd to British Lt. E.C.A. Miles
4/30/2014 - Firearms and Militaria: Live Salesroom Auction
.455 caliber, 6.5" barrel, S/N
48932
. Blue finish, walnut checkered grips. British proofs on frame and barrel. Inscription on left side of frame "
Lt. E.C.A. Miles, France 1915-16., Macedonia, 1917-18
."
Most certainly a serving officer, a Captain E.C.A. Miles is found in the UK
National Archives
online database in source documents W/O374/47738. Sadly, the records are not digitized and cannot be downloaded free of charge. The specific W/O374 (War Office) block of records at Kew indicate that Capt. Miles held a temporary commission or, alternatively, was a Territorial Officer (TA) having served during the First World War and left the army before 1923. Regiment or branch of service is not stated on the online summary page so it is impossible to trace his service from France to Macedonia. Note that E.C.A. Miles is not found in the August 1914
Army List
so he was not one of the 'Old Contemptibles.' Oddly, a search of the medal cards database revealed no one by that name. It is possible to obtain the W/O374 records by ordering a copy on the
UK National Archives
website for a nominal fee.
The British Army constituted in Salonika in October 1915 was part of the combined Allied effort to aid Serbia in the wake of the successful Bulgarian invasion of the Balkans that now threatened Greece. Commanded by General George Milne, by the spring of 1917 the British contingent numbered seven divisions plus support troops organized into two corps. British troops were not withdrawn from the ethnically torn Macedonian front until 1921.
Condition:
Good to very good condition with an excellent bore. It retains ca 90-95% original blue finish with some heavy pitting at the muzzle end of the barrel and some small patches of light to moderate pitting scattered about. The grips show heavy wear and several small chips.
