Steichen the Photographer
, Text by Carl Sandburg
5/6/2016 - Modern Art: Live Salesroom Auction
American, 1929. A black cloth hard-cover book with gilt lettering published by Harcourt, Brace & Co., first edition, numbered 723 out of 925 copies, hand signed by both Steichen and Sandburg, and featuring 49 important examples of Edward Steichen's photographic work, accompanied by a biographical text by poet Carl Sandburg; 12.5 x 10 in. (book size).
The lot also includes a separate photograph of Dana Steichen, Steichen's wife.
Provenance:
From the Estate of Kenneth Erwin, Portland, Michigan
Condition:
Very light wear to edges and corners of book (no damage, some color loss only). The binding is tight with the first few sheets being a little looser due to use and their position in the book. The innk from the signatures has stained on the opposite page. Slight discoloration to the edges of the pages typical with age and the edges being exposed. Slight staining of the sheets facing the photos from having been kept shut over a period of time. The separate photograph is laid (glued) on stock paper.
