Civil War Drum Mfd. by William Kilbourn of Albany, NY with Docs.
4/30/2014 - Firearms and Militaria: Live Salesroom Auction
14" tall by 16" in diameter. Civil war drum manufactured by William Kilbourn of Albany, New York. The drum was owned and used by Daniel S. Bailey from 1861 (age 12) until the end of the war (age 17) while a member of the Fife and Drum Corp of Marshall County, Indiana. He along with his brother Walter C. Bailey (who played fife) participated in rallies to raise troops from their area of northern Indiana for enlistment in the Union Army. Their two older brothers served in the famed 40th Indiana VI. The full provenance of the drum is provided in a lengthy letter (ca 1950) written by Orin P. Bailey (son of Daniel S. Bailey). There is a note regarding the provenance glued to the inside wall of the drum beneath the maker's label. This very drum was used by the two men to celebrate the victories of four wars - The Civil War, the Span-AM War, WW I, and WW II. It is complete with the carrying strap and 2 (post-war) drum sticks and tintype photo reported to be of Daniel S. Bailey. There is an extensive research file. The entire group was purchased from an estate sale in 1999.
Condition:
Overall condition is very good. Drum has one small repaired (2") split on the edge of the bottom head plus the snare is missing.
Sold: $1,762.50
