American, ca 1840s. A scrimshawed whale's tooth engraved on both sides, one featuring a war eagle in a cartouche surrounded by military standards including the 1830s flag of the Republic of Texas and the reverse depicting a couple embracing with an anchor and ship, possibly the U.S.S. St. Mary's, in the background, tooth on a wooden stand; lg. 4 in.
