Lot 892

Japanese Katana Koto Period
4/30/2014 - Firearms and Militaria: Live Salesroom Auction
24.75" blade length, 35.75" overall length.  The blade is attributed to the Yamashiro school of the Koto (old sword) period. The nakago (tang) has no mei (signature), but has 3 mekugi-ana or holes in it indicating its greater age and that it has been mounted at least 3 times. It is equipped with both a kozuka (the gokatana blade is signed) and a kogai.  The sami (rayskin) is a single piece indicating higher quality. The saya (scabbard) is equipped with a suspension mounting. The current mountings are attributed to the late Edo period. The sageo (cord) is original to the sword. This sword was brought to the US from Japan in 1899.

Condition:
The blade has a few blemishes but the ha (edge) and kissaki (point) are fine. The tape on the tsuka (handle) has been restored and the menuki (ornaments) are contemporary replacements. Overall condition is excellent.
