Percussion Target Rifle by
A. Escherich
of Baltimore, MD
4/30/2014 - Firearms and Militaria: Live Salesroom Auction
.44 caliber, 36" octagonal barrel, patent breech. Target front hood sight; rear sight has nice finials with a boar deeply relief engraved and a key to adjust windage, Snell-style percussion bolster. Engraving on the front of muzzle and on the breech of barrel. Tang with deeply relief chiseled hunter in German-style dress. Long tang with sight base for a lollipop stud. An unusually-shaped back-action lock nicely scroll-engraved with a deep relief panel carved in the rear of the lockplate of a dog pointing. Engraved in script is
A. Escherich Baltimore
along the bottom edge of lockplate. Deeply engraved patchbox lid with the rest scrolled engraving. Pointed-style buttplate with long engraved heel and toe. Engraved iron triggerguard and ferules. Double-set triggers. Fancy walnut stock with cheek piece and checkered wrist. Lot further includes a pair of bullet molds that go with this rifle.
Condition:
Barrel retains most of the original brown finish, just slightly dulled. About two inches from the breech on the left flat are two small areas of dark staining with some pitting mixing in. All metal has a nice untouched patina with a very sharp and crisp look. Wood is excellent. Inside of patchbox is the original German silver dovetail with blade front sight.
This is an outstanding engraved percussion sporting rifle.
