Lot of 2:
Day, Nicholas Wykoff (1839-1916). Day enlisted at Lincoln's first call for troops in April 1861, and was mustered into F&S of the 71st NY Infy. and was mustered out 3 months later. The following spring he was commissioned Captain and assigned to Co. H, 96th NY Infy. He was discharged for promotion to F&S of the NY 131st Infy. with he rank of Major. He received regular promotions to Col. in Jan. 1863. His brevet to BG was part of the omnibus awards of March 1865. Day is posed with Frederick A. Boardman ( d. 1864). Boardman enlisted as a Major in the 4th WI Cav. He had previously served in the Navy, accompanying Matthew Perry to Japan in 1852-1854. Boardman was killed in May 1864 at Comite River, LA. The cdv has a backmark of B. Moses, New Orleans.
Fitzhugh, Charles Lane (1838-1923). Fitzhugh was appointed to USMA ini 1859, but only attended until June 1861, when war had erupted. He was commissioned into the US 4th Light Artillery as a 1st Lieut. in October 1861. He received brevets for Captain (Shiloh) and Major (Smithfield, VA). In Feb. 1865 he was commissioned Colonel of the 6th NY Cav., and the following month he received brevets as Lt. Col. (Five Forks), Col. and Brig. Gen.(2). He transferred to the 2nd NY Prov'l. Cav. in June, and mustered out of volunteer service in August, but continued in service in the 4th US LA until May 1868. Cdv with C.D. Fredericks NY, Havana, Paris backmark. Pencil ID on verso.
