Three CDVs, Wisconsin BBGs: Horace Sanders, Benjamin Sweet, Frederick Winkler

Lot of 3:

Sanders, Horace Turner (1820-1865). Sanders enlisted as Colonel in Nov. 1861 and was commissioned into F&S of the 19th WI Infy. He received a brevet BG for meritorious service in April 1865. He died five months later in Washington, DC. Carte with inscription and signature on verso: "With Salutations of Esteem, H.T. Sanders, Col. 19th Regt. W.V." Backmark of Addis, Washington, DC.

Sweet, Benjamin Jeffery (1832-1874). Sweet enlisted in May 1861 as a Major, and commissioned Lt. Col. of the 6th WI Infy. in September. He was promoted to Col. of the 21st WI Infy. in July 1862. He was commissioned Colonel in the Veteran Reserve Corps in Sept. 1863, and given command of Camp Douglas, a POW camp. In that capacity, he thwarted a plot to free Confederate prisoners (who would then attack Chicago). His brevet BG came as a result of these actions in Dec. 1864. He resigned in Sept. 1865. He was wounded in Oct. 1862 at Chaplin Hills, KY.  Carte with backmark of Fassett's, Chicago.

Winkler, Frederick Charles (1838-1921). Winkler enlisted in Sept. 1862 as Captain of Co. B, 26th WI Infy. He received promotions to Major (11.17.63) and Colonel (8.17.64). He was awarded brevets as Colonel and BG (6.15.65) when he was commissioned into the Judge Advocate Dept. He is listed as wounded at Gettysburg on the first day. He mustered out in July 1865. Backmark of Radbruch of Milwaukee.
