Three OVI BBGs: James Monroe Comly, Henry S. Commager, and Azariah W. Doane
4/30/2014 - Firearms and Militaria: Live Salesroom Auction
Lot of 3:
Comly, James Munroe Stuart (1832-1887). Comly enlisted in June 1861 as a Major in F&S of the 63rd Ohio Infy. He resigned for promotion in October as Lt. Col. of the 23rd Ohio Infy. He was promoted to Colonel in October 1864, and received his brevet BG in the omnibus awards of March 1865. Rare cdv as colonel, with backmark of Elliott & Miller, Troy, Ohio.
Commager, Henry Steele (ca 1825-1867). Commager enlisted at Lincoln's first call for troops in the 3-month 14th Ohio Infantry as a private and mustered out in August. He then mustered into the 67th Ohio as a Captain of Co. A. He was promoted to Major (7.29.62) and Lt. Col. (8.28.62) in fairly short order. He is listed as wounded at Fort Wagner in July 1863. He was mustered into F&S as Colonel of the 184th Ohio Infy. in Feb. 1865, and received his brevet BG a week later. Cdv with no photographer's ID, later copy with gilt edges on mount. Period ink name and rank on verso (possible signature, though we could not locate any comparables). But the carte is post-war and Commager did not live long after the war.
Doane, Azariah Wall (1824-1911). Doane also enlisted at Lincoln's first call as a 1st Lieut. in the 12th Ohio, and was promoted to Captain two months later. The following year he was commissioned Lt. Col. in the 79th Ohio. He received his brevet BG in March 1865. He also received a commission for a colonelcy in June, but did not muster in. Cdv with backmark of Saltsman, Nashville.
Provenance:
The Robert Trownsell Collection
Condition:
Comly and Doane with pencil IDs on verso; both with minor foxing. Commager excellent.
