Two CDVs, Illinois BBGs: William P. Carlin and James H. Coates
4/30/2014 - Firearms and Militaria: Live Salesroom Auction
Carlin, William Passmore (1829 - 1903). (IL, USMA 1850, #1469) Carlin was posted to the 6th Infantry upon graduation, and fought the Sioux and Cheyennes in mid-decade. At the beginning of the Civil War he entered Volunteer service as Col. of the 38th IL Infy., receiving promotion to Brig. Gen. Vols. after Perryville in Oct. 1862. He won brevets as MG Vols., and BG and MG USA. After the war he again was posted to the frontier and promoted to Colonel in 1882. He was retired by statute in 1893. Cdv with backmark of J.W. Campbell, 20th Army Corps Photographer, Army of the Cumberland. Signed on front in lower margin.
Coates, James (1829 - 1902). Coates enlisted as captain in July 1861 and was commissioned into the 11th IL Infy. He rose to Colonel by 1863, and received a brevet (BG) in March 1865. Cdv with backmark of Washington Gallery, Vicksburg, MS. Signed on front. Corners clipped on mount.

Condition:
Carlin with soft corners, extensive foxing and a few water stains. Coates toned at top on verso. Other than corners, cdv is fine.
