English Percussion Tower Pistol
4/30/2014 - Firearms and Militaria: Live Salesroom Auction
.70 bore diameter, 8.25" round barrel. Lockplate marked with
Tower
and crown. Brass furniture and walnut stock. Lacks the typical British proof marks on the barrel. It is possible that this is a "made up" gun with a British lock and otherwise Southern outfitting, made for Confederate use. It was purchased with Lots 803 and 1237 from the estate of Isaac Thompson, CSA.
Isaac Thompson was with the 2nd Kentucky Cavalry. Following Hood's loss of Atlanta to the Union forces in September 1864, the 2nd Kentucky cavalry became part of General Joseph Wheeler's Cavalry unit to harass General Sherman's army during its "March to the Sea." These items were previously on display at a now defunct museum in Murfreesboro, Georgia.
