Lot 820

Percussion Half-Stock Rifle by Charles LiBeau
4/30/2014 - Firearms and Militaria: Live Salesroom Auction
.40 caliber, 41" octagonal barrel with patent breech, two gold lines inlayed at breech, marked in a gold square Libeau with matching dark blue finish, Cincinnati.  Engraved lockplate marked S Bryant,  Armstrong Philadelphia.  Engraved lockplate and breech plug. Engraved iron triggerguard with finials. Iron patchbox, silver-plated; iron buttplate, silver-plated; silver escutcheons; silver inlaid plaque on cheek piece, engraved J. Wolf and dated 1829. Silver thumb rest. Finely striped maple stock with checkered wrist and cheek piece.  Charles Libeau (possibly originally l'Beau) worked in Cincinnati from 1829-1844.  He is listed in American Gunsmiths by Frank Sellers.

"J. Wolf" is a bit more obscure. A likely candidate is Jacob Wolf (either Sr. or Jr.), bakers and boarding house owners in the early part of the 19th century in Cincinnati. Both men appear in the 1840 census. The bakery was located in several buildings, mostly in the area of 5th and Walnut (one directory gives the address as Walnut between 4th and 5th, another on 5th between Main and Walnut). They would appear to have been fairly successful, as the name appears in several lists of organizations, such as an investigative committee of the Bar Association (1879, probably Jr.). In addition, Jacob Wolf (again, probably Jr.) is listed in the Cincinnati "Blue Book" and Social Register of 1879. The quality of workmanship on this firearm suggests that it was not inexpensive even nearly two hundred years ago.

Condition:
Barrel has a dull dark blue look. Lock and hammer are excellent; the color of the finish blends well with the barrel finish.  Markings are sharp and crisp.  Stock has a very nice untouched patina.  Silver with black patina.
