Percussion Half-Stock Rifle by McDermit
4/30/2014 - Firearms and Militaria: Live Salesroom Auction
.36 caliber,  40" octagonal barrel. Marked on top of barrel A. P. McDermit in a banner; also engraved in script for J. D. White. Patent breech.  Engraved forward-action percussion lock and in a banner marked R.B.  Notched rear sight, blade front sight. Maple stock with German silver furniture.  A very old period repair to the wrist with German silver.  A.P. McDermit is listed in American Gun Makers, but no place of business is listed.

According to one forum on americanlongrifles.org, this is believed to be Andrew P. McDermit (1830-1899) of Mason Co., VA (W.VA). McDermit is listed as a gunsmith in both the 1850 and 1860 censuses in Point Pleasant.


Condition:  
Barrel has a  very dark brown patina. Lock blends well with the barrel. German silver has untouched tarnish. Stock with nice patina.
