Confederate McClellan Saddle and Pair of Boots
4/30/2014 - Firearms and Militaria: Live Salesroom Auction
This saddle was likely produced at the Richmond Arsenal late in the Civil War, ca 1863-1864. Well-used saddle complete with all of its leather straps plus a woven wool girth. Wood stirrups with leather stirrup hoods (leather on near side is torn). Plus pair of leather boots complete with original wool boot straps.
Provenance:
From the Estate of Kenneth Erwin, Portland, Michigan
Condition:
CS embossed pommel shield with top right corner missing. Saddle skirt is curled up on both sides. Missing rear saddle ring on off side as well as missing escutcheon on near side cantle. Stitching is unraveling along the edges of both sides of the cantle as well as the tree bars. Offside of cantle with severe 4" rip in the leather and with a crack in the wood tree underneath.Iron plate on front of pommel is broken with only a fragment remaining. Leather straps are intact but are slightly dry and with light crazing in some areas. Overall in good condition for a truly used Confederate Civil War saddle.
