Lot 894

1st Model Henry Rifle Used by Sgt. A.C. Holmes, Co. G, 10th West Virginia Infantry
4/30/2014 - Firearms and Militaria: Live Salesroom Auction
.44 RF caliber, 24.5" barrel, S/N 2352. Early style barrel markings, 900-yard rear barrel sight. Right side of frame has E.C.M. scratched into the brass frame. On the left side of frame is scratched B.H.H. Original sling ring still in the front retainer. All screws and stock have matching numbers. "Perch belly" walnut stock.  Right side of walnut stock has the name A. C. Holmes scratched into the stock.  This rifle is well documented by Wiley Sword who makes reference to Serial No. 2352 on p.80 of History of the Henry Rifle, 2006 as belonging to A.C. Holmes (scratched on stock.)  Interestingly, Sword refers to another Henry rifle on p. 83 inscribed "A.C. Holmes/10th W. Va. Inf. Vols." without any serial number.  Accompanying the gun is a copy of History of the Henry Rifle by Sword and Sgt. Holmes' military and pension records from the National Archives.

Alfred C. Holmes (1834-1910) was twenty-five when he enlisted in Co. G, 10th West Virginia Inf. on March 12, 1862 at Glenville, Virginia as Private. Upon mustering in on May 6 he was advanced to Corporal, and was later appointed Sergeant on September 1, 1862. Holmes was “present” with the company for the duration of its service mustering out as Sergeant at Richmond on May 6, 1865. The 10th West Virginia participated in over 40 engagements—scouts, skirmishes and expeditions—during its term of service variously attached to the 8th Corps, the Department of West Virginia, and the 24th Corps, Army of the James. The regiment was later equipped as mounted infantry with their rapid-fire Henry Rifles and were particularly heavily engaged in the Shenandoah Valley, seeing action at Opequan, Winchester, Fisher’s Hill, and Cedar Creek during the tempestuous August to October 1864 period. Towards the end of the war the regiment suffered a grueling winter the trenches before Petersburg, emerging to take part in the successful assault on the city and the subsequent whirlwind Appomattox Campaign and pursuit of Lee. The 10th West Virginia remained on garrison duty in Richmond until mustering out August 9, 1865 having lost 95 officers and men killed and wounded during the war. Sergeant Homes pension papers show that he applied for relief while living in West Union, W. Virginia in July 1890 claiming a war-related injury to his left breast plus a multitude of other physical complaints—rheumatism, heart trouble, disease of the throat and cataracts. He claim was initially approved but the monthly allotment was adjusted and reduced the next year. He sought re-instatement of the “illegal decrease” and then petitioned for increases in 1899, 1905 and 1909—all approved “due to advancing age of the veteran.” Alfred C. Holmes died on November 10, 1910.
