Captain Owens D. Havely, Pre- and Civil War-Period Letters between Havely and his Future Wife
1/20/2014 - Discovery Auction
16 items, including two covers.

Owens D. Havely of Sedalia, Missouri, enlisted as a captain in the 7th Missouri State Militia Cavalry in 1862. He died of disease on campaign, November 5, 1862, in Cassville, Missouri.

Included in this lot is the letter written by the second in command of Co. E, 7th Missouri SM Cavalry, 1st Lieutenant A. Dorst, informing Mrs. Havely of her husband’s death:

Dear friend it has become my painful duty to inform you of the death of your Husband who died yesterday Morning Nov 5 at 3 oclock at Cassville. He had been complaining some five or six weeks of Daireah and & indijestion & not having a surgeon in whom he could place confidence he neglected taking medicine and by being exposed by knight riding & laying on the ground when he had to rest he was thrown into conjestion. He was able to walk about camp up to the evening of the 3rd but was verry weak and looked more like a mooving corpse than a living person.

Dorst continues, explaining how they tried to make a bed in a wagon in order to not leave Captain Havely behind, but he fell unconscious and died as the regiment tried to get back to Union territory.

…while you mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate husband we also mourn the loss of a good soldier & leader in whom we need not be ashamed. He was always at his post never flinching, uncompromising with the enemies of our country, in whom we all placed implicit confidence. In fact we all looked up to him as children would to a parent…

Most of the other correspondence consists of letters Owens retained during his tumultuous courtship with his wife Jane, dated 1852 to 1854. Also included is a November 18, 1862 ANS from Fountain May expressing condolences to Jane Havely.
