18th Century Chinese Bronze Deities

Chinese, 18th century.  Two hollow-cast gilt bronze standing deities, one cold-painted in reds and blacks, both wearing long and flowing robes, one having an impressed two-character Chinese mark on bottom; tallest ht. 4.5 in.

Special Provenance Note:
In July of 1900, General Adna R. Chafee of the U.S. Army was sent to China to command the Chinese Relief Expedition.  The U.S. Expeditionary force was formed to protect the U.S. and other foreign legations in Peking from attacks by the Boxers.

The consignor's grandfather was a member of the U.S. Ninth Infantry that was ordered from manila to China to serve under General Chaffee.  While there, he acquired the items offered here.
