West Point-educated John Caldwell Tidball compiled an exemplary Civil War record as Captain, 2nd US Artillery and Colonel, 4th NY Heavy Artillery, accruing two “gallantry” brevets to brigadier and a third to brevet Major General by the cessation of hostilities. Tidball remained in the regular army after the war, advancing in 1881 to Colonel & ADC to Army General W.T. Sherman. As Colonel of the 1st Artillery, he retired in 1889 and died in 1906.
