Sixth Plate Daguerreotype of a Northern Militia Sergeant
Ca 1855, unidentified urban militia subject wearing a derivative M1851 frock coat similar to the US Army pattern with stand up collar and single row of nine buttons. The frock coat lacks the regular army solid branch of service color found on the collar and cuffs having instead three smaller cuff buttons not prescribed in the 1851 regulations. This NCO wears worsted epaulettes with 3/8" diameter fringe for sergeants and corporals. In the regular army the fringe epaulettes were replaced by brass shoulder scales in 1854.
